BIA was retained by the South Station Bus Terminal Management team, Avison Young, to evaluate the facility for ways to improve customer service by upgrading signage and public amenities. Signage studies evaluated alternative approaches to building identification and wayfinding that would make the terminal and public parking facilities more identifiable. On the interior, BIA studied alternative locations for additional restrooms as well as options for renovating the existing facilities. Based on feedback from Bus Carriers and the MBTA, it was determined that renovation of existing facilities was the most viable and cost-effective option.
Based on feedback, BIA designed a complete update of the restrooms, including all new fixtures, floor and wall finishes, lighting, and amenities. Temporary restrooms were installed nearby to facilitate phased construction over a 4-month period. The construction has been completed and the facility upgrades have been positively received by all stakeholders.
